Lecture 0. Introduction to the
section - popularily on meliorations
If a professor grandfather can not clearly explain
the core of his scientific work to his grandson, then it means that he does not
understand it clearly himself. |
(Joke
of American scientists) |
Full ignorance is not much
the biggest mischief; accumulation of poor grasp is even worse. |

Changing
over to market relations and widespread development of farming in Uzbekistan significantly
increased concern of farmers to acquisition of special knowledge on agronomy and
arable farming and also on melioration of irrigated lands.
Very often, people
of non-farming occupations went on the land during rampant development of farming.
Simple, understandable and accessible manuals on meliorations are necessary to
be developed for them. On the other hand, there are people having agricultural
education and a wealth of experience in practical work among the farmers, but
so far they have not opportunity to be aware of information on meliorations issues.
Participation in numerous "Farmers schools" workshops conducted
by different organizations, personal contacts with many of farmers, and showed
interest from their side to the lectures resulted on idea to develop a website
in Internet by the authors which would popularly enlight general imagination on
meliorative methods at irrigated lands, and, especially - at salinity soils and
at soils which are subject to salinity.
Besides,
specific recommendations on methods of water and salt control regimes of soils
in any particular natural conditions of Uzbekistan are also needed for farmers.
With taking into account that "soils melioration" subject as a school
is cross-disciplinary, i.e. it is a synthesis of sciences on:
- soil and its particle-size distribution and chemical
composition;
- soil solutions, formed under impact of irrigation and salinization;
- hydrogeology (groundwater formation and its flowing);
- climate and in connection
with it, treatment of irrigation water rationing for any crop;
- irrigation
schedule and leaching of salts in soil;
- methods of draining of irrigated
lands, purposes and designs of drainage systems;
- features of various crops
cultivation, requirements for soil moisture and tolerable level of its salinity
at different development stages of crops;
- soil-improving methods of cultivation
and reserves of agricultural technologies (zero and minimal tillage),
The
authors decided to widen in some degree the usual frames of schoolbooks on melioration
and describe understandable, simple as possible main processes going at irrigated
fields and their interrelationship (disclaiming scientific integrity and almost
without mathematical manipulation).
New
ideas in irrigated farming, update of findings in field of melioration and crops
cultivation at arid zones, and also recommendations on efficient melioration techniques
will be enlighten in a set of short articles. That would be useful for farmers,
summer residents, college students, bachelors and masters as supplementary books
additional. That also could be used for trainings of farmers at level of water
users associations, of dehkan and farmers associations or by special consulting
organizations for farmers.
The authors have
long-term experience in research and design, related publications in scientific
reviews, presentations developed for different level of training of listening
public, starting from popular up to strictly scientific - assigned for simple
farmers.
